Disability Services

All mainstream public services are required to serve people with disabilities, and to ensure that their services are accessible to people with disabilities, where this is practicable and appropriate. Each public body must have an access officer to arrange for and co-ordinate the provision of assistance and guidance to people with disabilities who are seeking to access their services. The National Disability Authority developed the statutory Code of Practice on Accessibility of Public Services and Information provided by Public Bodies which guides the public service in this regard.

Specialist disability services and supports are funded by the Health Service Executive, and delivered predominantly by voluntary sector providers, as well as the Health Service Executive. Services to people with physical or sensory disabilities, people with intellectual disabilities, and people with autism are managed by the social care directorate. Services to people with mental health difficulties are managed by the mental health directorate.
