Annual Report 2010

The 2010 Annual Report of the National Disability Authority marked a busy first year in the current three year cycle under our Strategic Plan 2010-2012. It also saw the culmination of the National Disability’s first decade in existence and the first full year in office for the members of the new Authority.

The National Disability Authority's work in 2010 included:

  • Supporting the implementation of the National Disability Strategy in key areas of communications, employment, environment, health, social protection and transport
  • Contributing to the review of the operation of the Disability Act 2005
  • Working closely with the Department of Health and Children on their wide scale Value for Money and Policy Review of Disability Services and with the HSE on their Review of Congregated Settings
  • The publication of Guidelines for Accessible Maritime Passenger Transport
  • The publication of research into the quality of publicly-funded maternity services for mothers with intellectual disabilities and their babies
  • Designing an eLearning tool to provide disability equality training to public sector staff
  • The annual conference on Independent Living and Community Participation
  • The 24 Hour Universal Design Challenge 2010 with the theme of Technology in the City focusing on new designs to improve the accessibility and usability of information and services offerings in public places
  • Hosting the European Design for All eAccessibility Network AGM and conference entitled Technology in the City

From the 1 June 2010 mInisterial responsibility for the National Disability Authority transferred from the former Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform to the newly constituted Department of Community, Equality and Gaeltacht Affairs.
