Disability Terminology and Language
The National Disability Authority’s advice paper on disability language and terminology is a living document that is updated periodically and we always like to receive feedback and suggestions on the content within from Disabled Persons Organisation, disabled people and other relevant organisations. Feedback can be sent to nda@nda.ie.
The content of this paper was developed based on:
- A review of relevant literature
- The NDA’s 2021 consultation with Disabled Person’s Organisations
- Findings from the Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth’s consultation on the first state party report on the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities
The paper outlines relevant background information before highlighting our recommendations. It also includes a glossary of terms that are no longer in use as well as a list of recommended alternative terminology.
