Forecasting Future Demand

Ensuring that the level of supports available to people with disabilities are sufficient to meet their needs is an important area of work for the NDA. Population growth, population ageing and people with disabilities living longer mean that the demand for supports changes over time. The NDA has contributed to work in the area of analysing future need for disabilities in a number of ways in recent years.

Forecasting demand for disability services

We supported the work of Transforming Lives Working Group 1 to produce their 2018 (revised in 2021) Report on Future Needs for Disability Services.

The Department of Health built on this work and in 2021 published Disability Capacity Review to 2032 - A Review of Social Care Demand and Capacity Requirements to 2032.

We provided input to the Department’s analysis and made a submission to the Department of Health on the Action Plan Framework that it was developing in 2021 to progress the findings of the Disability Capacity Review.

The NDA also examined the need for increased resourcing of children’s disability services in our 2015 report 'Children’s Disability Services in Ireland'.
