What is Universal Design?

Universal Design involves the design of products, services, buildings and information and communications technology (ICT), so they’re accessible to everybody regardless of age, size, ability, or disability.

The Centre for Excellence in Universal Design is dedicated to the principle of universal access. Universal access allows the people of Ireland to participate in a society that takes account of human differences. It lets everybody interact with their environment to the best of their ability.

The team within the Centre works hard to develop guidelines and highlight good practice in relation to Universal Design. This helps stakeholders have practical information on how to ensure society is as inclusive as possible.

The Centre for Excellence in Universal Design also engages with a wide range of professional bodies to build awareness of Universal Design through curricula across the education system and through continuous professional development.
