Children born after June 2002 are eligible, under the Disability Act 2005, for an independent assessment of health and disability support needs arising from a disability.

In the light of concerns set out in a HSE report that the assessment process was lengthy and was absorbing significant resources, this study examined how the process functioned on the ground.
