We have published our report ‘A synthesis of existing data on current attitudes towards autistic people in Ireland’, which forms our work under Action 1 of the Autism Innovation Strategy (AIS).
This report will inform the development of a national autism acceptance and understanding campaign that corresponds with Action 2 of the AIS.
The review found that while awareness of autism has increased, knowledge remains limited and attitudes vary across different social and professional contexts. Public perceptions and professional attitudes across education, health and social care, and the justice system are influenced by levels of understanding and experience with autism.
The report also highlights effective public campaign strategies, including the use of personal stories, multi-channel communication, meaningful involvement of the autistic community, and considering cultural differences around autism to challenge stereotyping and promote inclusive practices.
