About the strategy
The NDA welcomes the publication of the new National Human Rights Strategy for Disabled People 2025-2030.
The strategy was launched by government earlier today, with Taoiseach Micheál Martin, Tánaiste Simon Harris, Minister for Children, Disability and Equality, Norma Foley, and Minister of State with Responsibility for Disability, Hildegarde Naughton all welcoming the strategy. The strategy aims to provide a blueprint for further realisation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) in Ireland.
Centred around five key pillars identified as priorities by people with disabilities and their representative organisations, the new strategy contains a range of ambitious commitments which seek to improve the lives of disabled people across the country. Recognising the need for cross-departmental and agency collaboration, the strategy also sets out a whole-of-government framework and approach, with an emphasis on mainstream-first delivery.
Our role
The NDA played a key role in ensuring that the voices of disabled people featured prominently in the strategy development process. At the request of the Department of Children, Disability and Equality, the NDA carried out a comprehensive national public consultation to inform the development of the strategy. The consultation was underpinned by principles of participation and aimed to be a genuine, accessible, and transparent process which meaningfully engaged with disabled people. Read our consultation report.
The NDA will play an important role in guiding and monitoring the implementation of the strategy. The NDA will facilitate the establishment of both a Data and Evidence Working Group, to advance the development of indicators for a rights-based approach to monitoring the strategy, and a Disability Research and Data Advisory Group, to foster a more strategic and coordinated approach to disability research and data across the public sector.
In addition, the NDA will be represented on the National Human Rights Strategy for Disabled People 2025-2030 Delivery and Monitoring Committee and the five pillar groupings.
The new National Human Rights Strategy for Disabled People 2025-2030 is available to read on the website of the Department of Children, Disability and Equality.
