About this research
We commissioned researchers from the School of Nursing and Midwifery in Trinity College Dublin to conduct a literature review on the causes, prevention and management of crisis situations among young disabled people.
The findings from this review will support our work on Action 83 of the Autism Innovation Strategy 2024 – “To identify best practice in supporting families and young autistic people and other young people with disabilities who have high support needs, including mental health support needs”.
This academic scoping review of published literature was commissioned by the National Disability Authority (NDA) in 2024. The authors (Doyle, Cleary, Eustace Cook, Fleming & McMahon, 2024) conducted a rigorous scoping of published literature and this review provides useful insight into the myriad of factors linked to behaviours that challenge in young people with disabilities, interventions to address these challenges and broadly considers the supports needed for those in crisis.
While the review does include studies that considered the perspectives of people with disabilities it was not directly informed by people with disabilities or autistic people as this was an research report that aimed to summarise existing academic and grey literature. This report will inform future projects by the NDA under the Autism Innovation Strategy where the views of disabled people, including autistic people will be sought.
