In 2006, the NDA published a 'Code of Practice on Accessibility of Public Services and Information provided by Public Bodies', to provide guidance and support for public bodies in meeting their new obligations under Sections 26, 27 and 28 of the Disability Act 2005. The Code was declared, by Government order, an approved statutory Code of Practice under the Disability Act 2005, in April 2006 (as outlined in Statutory Instrument no. 163 of 2006).

This report presents the findings of the NDA's initial monitoring survey in 2008 on the implementation of its Code of Practice on Accessibility of Public Services and Information provided by Public Bodies. The report was presented to the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform and made available for review by all key stakeholders.

The aim of the report is twofold:

  1. to help both the NDA and the Minister to evaluate implementation of the Code across the public sector
  2. to provide comparative data and best practice examples against which all public bodies will be able to assess and continue to improve their own performance.
